Oyster in Claude and ChatGPT
Configure server and storage solutions from the assistant you already use. Your assistant talks with you; Oyster checks every requirement and design against vendor rules and builds the bill of materials from exact catalog articles.
Get started
Copy the instructions, paste them into your assistant, and it walks you through connecting Oyster.
What the connector does
Oyster is an MCP server. Your AI assistant does the conversation: it asks about the workloads, sizes the solution and explains the choices. Oyster does the parts an assistant cannot do reliably on its own:
- keeps the case (requirements, design, configuration) so it can be continued later, in the assistant or in the Oyster app;
- checks that each fact was stated by the customer and that the requirements and the design were confirmed before anything is built;
- validates the design against captured vendor rules, and refuses designs that cannot be built;
- builds the configuration from exact catalog articles, with quantities per node.
A case started in Claude or ChatGPT opens in the Oyster app, and the other way round.
Tools
The assistant chooses which tools to call. Read-only tools are marked as such to the client.
- Get case
getCase - Lists your recent cases in the connected company, or returns where one stands: phase, open questions, what awaits confirmation, the design, the built configuration and its documents.
- Create case
createCase - Opens a case from the customer's request, with what they are trying to achieve.
- Save requirements
saveRequirements - Records what the customer stated: the goal, the workloads, vendor, resilience and support, and their answers to open questions in their own words.
- Confirm requirements
confirmRequirements - Records that the customer confirmed the requirements; the design phase starts.
- Search design knowledge
searchVendorKnowledge - Searches Oyster's vendor design knowledge for the case.
- Save design
saveDesign - Saves the design and checks it against the vendor rules and the requirements.
- Build configuration
buildConfiguration - Records that the customer confirmed the design and builds the configuration: exact catalog articles that satisfy every captured rule, with download links to the vendor configurator's import file (HPE OCA) and the BOM.
- Adjust configuration
adjustConfiguration - Expert-only, listed only for accounts that turned on expert adjustments in Oyster (Settings > Profile): changes one decision the builder made on its own, shown under decisions in a build result, and rebuilds. Used only when you ask for it.
Oyster returns its open questions one at a time, with the options where there are any. The assistant asks them in the chat, in its own question view where it has one, and each answer is saved in your own words before the next question.
How to connect
You need an Oyster account and a company in Oyster. The server address is:
https://www.oyster.tech/mcpClaude
- Open Customize → Connectors → Add → Add custom connector.
- Name it Oyster and paste the server address.
- Choose Connect, sign in with your Oyster account and choose the company the connector may work in.
ChatGPT
- Open Plugins in the sidebar → Add → Add custom MCP server.
- Name it Oyster, paste the server address and choose OAuth as the authentication.
- Sign in with your Oyster account, choose the company, then write @Oyster in a new chat.
If Oyster is listed in the assistant's connector directory, you can connect it from there instead.
Then ask, for example:
- “I need two HPE servers for about 40 VMs, high availability.”
- “Continue my case for the DL380 cluster and build the configuration.”
- “The customer now wants 25GbE instead of 10GbE, update the design.”
Accounts and access
Signing in uses OAuth: the assistant never sees your Oyster password. The connection is bound to your user and to the one company you choose, and sees only that company's cases. Members with view access can read cases but not change them. Product data is returned for the case at hand only; the connector has no catalog export or bulk listing.
Pricing
The conversation runs on your own Claude or ChatGPT plan. Oyster charges for what it delivers: a built configuration costs Oyster credits, once per design version. Building the same design again is free; a changed design on the same case is charged at a lower rebuild price; a build Oyster refuses is free. Opening cases, recording requirements and saving designs are free.
When the credit balance does not cover a build, the assistant shows the price and a link to buy credits in Oyster. Payment always happens in Oyster, never inside the assistant.
Your data
- What Oyster stores: the case: the customer's statements the assistant passes along (verbatim, so that requirements can be traced to them), the requirements, the design and the configuration. They are stored in your company's Oyster account, like cases created in the app.
- What the assistant receives: the state of the case it works on and the results of its tool calls. Your AI provider processes the conversation under your agreement with them.
- Deletion: ask support@oyster.tech to delete a case, or your account and its cases.
The full privacy policy and the terms of service apply to the connector as to the app.
Disconnecting
Remove Oyster under Customize → Connectors (Claude) or Plugins (ChatGPT). This revokes the assistant's access; your cases stay in Oyster.
